Dude… wtf is up with this weather lately?

First, it was 18 degrees last week. IN TOWN. It just doesn’t get that cold in Austin. Then the past couple days its been 80+. Such weird weather this year, constantly pinging back and forth from one extreme to the other. Freezing pony, sweating pony, freezing pony, sweating pony. Or really: psycho pony, lazy pony, psycho pony, lazy pony. I think we’re all living in constant fear of colic.

On Saturday I bundled up and went out to do trot sets once it warmed up to 32 degrees. Five layers. That’s how many it takes for a Texan to not turn into a popsicle when it’s freezing outside. Thank goodness for my heavy SSG winter gloves, I really have no idea how you northerners do it. Henry was quite lit, so while I was trying to do trot sets, it was really more of leap/squeal sets. The next day it was in the 50’s, and he was back to normal.
Then on Monday it was SUPER WINDY, and Henry was seeing demons. The same field that he rides around literally every day was terrifying, to the point where he was just standing there staring at random things and trembling. He just about vacated the premises when a bird flew out of a tree. He’s typically not that spooky, so that was a weird and super irritating day.

By Tuesday it was 80 degrees and Henny said it was way too hot to work. I had to kick him just to keep him walking, and he considered most of my aids to be suggestions.

Despite the weird weather, I’m glad that I’ve at least been able to ride. Temps for the next couple weeks look much more stable (60-80, ftw) but there’s also a lot of rain in the forecast. As long as we don’t have any more 18 degree mornings, I can live with it. Y’all keep that below freezing shit up north, please.
I love that we got the warm weather back again, although my little Michigan mare DGAF about snow or cold. Let’s see how she handles TX summers…

i hate when they get that spooky. i’ve taken to dismounting when runkle really starts seeing shit that isn’t there because he’s WAY too fast.
it was in the single digits on tuesday. today it’s 60. I can’t. I don’t know how the whole world isn’t colicking.

Henny tends to do more of a warmblood spook (all 4 legs spread wide, stop, snort) than the “elvis has left the building” TB spook, but geez I dunno what was up with him that day. He’s never that spooky. The flipflopping weather is making everyone batty.

We swung from 75 degrees yesterday (unheard of in January) to a massive ice storm predicted for this weekend (our DoT issued a ‘don’t travel’ for tonight through Sunday). Take your meds Mother Nature.

we were 11 degrees the other day. 11. Today it is already 60 almost at 9 a.m. this weekend snow. Shoot me now. Please.
Ha i hate that spook no matter the type. that is when i usually topple off (center of gravity is much worse as i get older) 🙂

Haha, I’ll keep the cold…need more snow though to go with it!

The only time Courage’s hooves touch soft ground is in the indoor so he’s a nutter right now too. I don’t blame him and it’s definitely keeping me from flaunting doctors orders and climbing aboard.

We’re have similar weather- it was NINE DEGREES last week and it was 75 yesterday. (With 40 mph winds.) We’re supposed to get some kind of death-ice storm this weekend, so that’s great. I’m almost looking forward to the awful heat of summer.

I DO NOT GET IT!!! We don’t have anything cold in our forecast for now, just tons of rain.

Hahaha….this is such a cute post. We are on week three of it not getting above 0 here in northern WI. Last night it was -4 so I opted to ride bareback so I could steal some heat from Clay. 😛 It’s not awesome. Looking forward to riding the shit out of next week when it’s supposed to be in the 30s. It’ll basically feel like a beach vacation. And this has been a pretty mild winter so far! But I will say that I love those first few cold days of fall when the horses get all frisky from the nip in the air. Those are not days to trail ride or hack in the field, however. Those are days to do collected work and teach piaffe and passage, because you suddenly have a nice “active hind leg” and their poll is up. 😉 😉

We’re flipflopping constantly from winter to summer… it makes things very interesting lol. I’d be ok if it just stayed summer.

-6*C here yesterday…..with a low of -27*C WITHOUT windchill. -40*C with windchill……
By Monday we are up to 4*C. Trade?
I suggest investing in a legit winter coat even though the cold doesn’t come often for you.It will cut out at least 2+ layers.

You should move south. lol

It’s weird…but I kind of like winter. Well snow anyways, and normal winter temperatures are bad….-27*C is absolutely terrible though.
I also can’t imagine a christmas without a bunch of snow!

Ever since Yankee colicked last year due to weather like this, I have lived in a constant state of panic/overanalyze every move he makes. The weather here in the last two weeks have been INSANE. -10 to 65 in one week, now torrential rains, back to 20s then back to 50s in less than 3 days. I. CANT.

It’s the weirdest winter.

Oof. Not OK. It should be a hot OR cold week, not both.
I guess the good side to all the rain we are getting is that it keeps the temps relatively stable. Although, I’m over this dump rain twice a week so nothing ever dries crap.

From Wednesday to Sunday we did not get above 25-the nights were in single digits, days in the 20s. This week its been in the 50s and 60s with a high today near 70. I went from chipping ice out of buckets to up to my eyeballs in mud.
I would love this weather if it would stop raining. Ugh.

We have barns and arenas and buildings collapsing everywhere because of our weird extreme amount of snow, and rain, and more snow, and extra cold (negatives). This is the worst winter ever, and now that things are kind of thawing, we have flooding. But, it was kind of nice to wear just a sweatshirt outside when it was 32 yesterday.

Buckle in people because it’s going to get way worse in years to come! Climate change = more extreme weather.

It has been awful here in MA. Last Saturday and Sunday were around 15 degrees and the horses were in multiple heavyweights in the middle of the day and today we are almost breaking the record at 60 degrees and they’re naked. We really are just crossing our fingers no ponies colic.

Ugh, I want to feed Taran Red Bull or something because with this 80 degree weather he just can’t. Maybe I’ll clip him again, I dunno. I’m happier with 70s than teens so that something I guess?

It’s 70 degrees today and supposed to snow on Saturday?? What is this black magic??

Here too! It was 6 the other day. Today? 59. Of course I still can’t ride because the 8 inches of snow we got Saturday all melted and now it’s a lake in the ring. Plus my horses are nuts and the footing will not allow for a lunge. And I won’t stay on without one, especially in the dark.
I’ve been worried about tummy aches too. I think it helps that my barn is heated. It’s a pretty constant 45, so the horses aren’t really hanging out in extremes. But they do go outside no matter the temps, so there is that.

Our weather has really been yo-yo-ing this year too. I really wish it would just pick a decent temp range and stick with it!

Yeah, I had the seeing demons ride today. Delayed reaction I guess. Jumps we jump all the time were terrifying. Standards blown over in the wind were death traps. And OH GOD WHO PUT THAT TROUGH THERE. I’m so glad it’s leveling out again now.

Ugh wind is the worst sometimes. Always blows all the monsters out of their hidey holes. Boo winter. It had been bitterly icy cold in Maryland but warmed up this week (while I’m in even more bitterly icy cold Minnesota, naturally). And the geniuses at my barn watered the indoor right before the cold snap so the footing froze… Hopefully riding will be a thing we can do eventually tho.

It’s been sub-10 degrees for what feels like weeks here and now finally it’s “warm!” 35 today but with nasty ice rain so that’s fun. But the next week or so will be in the 40s which feels positively balmy at this point in the winter.
